Marvel-themed slot machines are coming to an end.
The well-known collection of slot machines from the Marvel superhero franchise is being discontinued. The manufacturer Playtech is planning to take these games out of its partner casinos by the end of this month due to an expired license agreement with the Disney Group, who are in control of the brand. Last week, Playtech requested its marketing partners to remove all pictures featuring Marvel characters by April 1st.
Playtech had previously made deals with Marvel Entertainment together with other companies like Amaya Gaming for using their comic characters. But since then, Disney Company took over Marvel Entertainment in 2009. They are known for being against games of chance, so a renewal of the agreements under the new management wasn't an option.
The loss of these popular titles will affect several of Playtech's partner casinos, who frequently promote these famous characters. As a direct substitute, the "Age of the Gods" series will take over the shared jackpot previously used by the Marvel Slots. There are also similar "Age of the Gods" variations for some Marvel titles with the same features, just presenting a different visual appearance:
- Iron Man 2 - Age of the Gods: King of Olympus
- The Incredible Hulk - Age of the Gods: Prince of Olympus
- Fantastic Four - Age of the Gods: Furious Four
- The Avengers - Age of the Gods
- Elektra - Age of the Gods: Goddess of Wisdom
It remains to be seen whether it was the gameplay or the subject matter that captured the players' interest. However, Playtech is also exploring alternatives for fans of comics.
Despite the loss of the Marvel license, Playtech will still stay committed to using comic characters in their slot machines. They already established a partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products in 2016, which is now expanding to include more licenses. The company owns the rights to characters from DC Comics - Marvel's main competitor. These agreements have caused a few slot games like "Batman & The Joker Jewels" and "Batman & Catwoman Cash" - based on the 1960s Batman TV series - to be created. They have more high-profile DC Comics licenses in the pipeline, which will transform into slot games like Batman v Superman and The Dark Knight trilogy. Therefore, without Disney, Playtech won't run out of comic slots.
