Marriott Hotels plans new hotel near Wynn Casino Resort in Emirates
Marriott International recently unveiled plans for the JW Marriott Resort Al Marjan Island and JW Marriott Residences Al Marjan Island, located near Wynn Al Marjan Island, which is under construction in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Marriott project is expected to cost $1.3 billion and will include 300 rooms and 524 residences. The Marriott and Wynn hotels are ideally located 30 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah International Airport and an hour from Dubai International Airport.

Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts broke ground on Wynn Al Marjan Island earlier this year, with plans to open in early 2027.
Marriott project may push Wynn to open faster
On paper, the JW Marriott Resort Al Marjan Island and JW Marriott Residences Al Marjan Island are not direct competitors to Wynn Al Marjan Island, as the latter aims to become the first regulated casino hotel in the UAE.
However, Marriott's announcement has fueled speculation that Wynn may accelerate its schedule in the UAE as Marriott looks to open its venues by the end of 2026.
Wynn Al Marion Island has not yet received a gambling license but is considered one of the largest gambling venues in the world. The property includes resort facilities, a hotel with 500 rooms and suites and 24 restaurants, all with ocean views. The property will also feature a 1,000-foot-tall tower and several beachfront villas.
Wynn is partnering with local hotel developer RAK Hospitality Holding LLC on the project, with the U.S. company expected to have about a third of the share. The project's cost is estimated to be close to $4 billion.
Marriott UAE joint venture could bode well for Wynn
Ultimately, Marriott and Wynn will compete for rooms, but the former can benefit the latter by sending guests to integrated venues for gaming and entertainment.
Additionally, the entry of a traditional American hotelier into Al Marjan Island on the back of Marriott's appeal suggests Wynn was wise to choose this location, something Dubai recently confirmed, suggesting it will be some time before Wynn considers casino gambling .
Some analysts believe the UAE may unveil a gambling framework later this year, which could pave the way for Wynn to greenlight casino operations sometime in 2024.
