Mark Cuban Remains Interested in DFW Casino and Would Partner with Sands.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has once again expressed his belief that the Dallas-Fort Worth region would be a suitable location for a casino resort. He shared this sentiment during a talk at the Chase's Make Your Move Summit in Frisco, Texas, where he emphasized the need for Texas lawmakers to reexamine their views on casino gaming.
In his speech at the conference, the 'Shark Tank' star highlighted the potential impact of a casino hotel on Texas' struggling tourism industry. According to Cuban, the state lacks the alluring attractions found in California and Florida, such as vast beaches and renowned theme parks, making it less appealing for leisure travelers.
"When you think of where you save up to travel, Texas isn't one of them. There's no real destination you save up for. That's a problem, and I think resort gaming would have a significant influence," Cuban remarked.
Previously, Cuban spoke about his desire to introduce a new arena for his basketball team, the Dallas Mavericks, as a part of an integrated resort in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which ranks as the second-largest metropolitan region in Texas.
Political Complications for Texas Casinos
Industry insiders and other owners of professional sports teams in Texas consider casinos to be far-fetched prospects, as illustrated by the recent legislative session. Although Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) has gone from ardently opposing casino gaming to being more receptive, a proposal to allow a single casino hotel in Texas' seven significant metro areas faced setbacks in May. The prospects of reviving this endeavor appear dim given the Texas legislature won't reconvene again until 2025.
For proponents of casino gaming to make it a reality, they'd have to amend the state's constitution, which necessitates a two-thirds majority in both houses. In the event this happens, the issue would then be put forth for voter approval. A variety of surveys suggest Texans support the introduction of gaming venues.
The failure of casino and sports betting legislation is just one in a long list of disappointments from the recent legislative session, which also includes the Republican-controlled, yet left-leaning state House's inability to pass bills on school choice and efforts to thwart Chinese investors from acquiring Texas land, as well as measures to strengthen election security.
Cuban Plans to Collaborate with Las Vegas Sands
Cuban previously revealed his intentions to collaborate with Las Vegas Sands, the biggest gaming company by market value, on a Dallas-Fort Worth integrated resort. This company is a robust advocate for bringing casino gaming to the second-largest state in the US and has donated millions in political contributions.
Las Vegas Sands presently operates no domestic properties, although it is considered a key contender for one of the three New York City-area casino licenses. In the meantime, Cuban has also been an advocate of legalizing regulated mobile sports betting in Texas.
"It's a fantastic sports city," Cuban said of Dallas during the conference. "People get enthusiastic about sports here, and that's a good thing."
