Spain: Latest News and Updates on the Country - Marjane Satrapi is awarded Asturias Prize.
An esteemed Iranian-French comic artist, illustrator, and director, Marjane Satrapi, has earned the prestigious Spanish Princess of Asturias Prize in the Communication and Humanities category.
Satrapi, aged 54, settled in France but hails from Iran and is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the international comic world by industry experts. Known for her captivating graphic novel, Persepolis (2000), which is an autobiographical narration of her Iranian upbringing, she mostly narrates her early life and youth.
In 2023, Satrapi, among others, created the collective graphic novel titled "Femme, vie, liberté," which tackles the riots that arose in Iran after Jina Mahsa Amini's death at the hands of the notorious moral police squad in 2022 and the ongoing human rights violations there.
The Prince-Heir of Spain has established these awards honoring recipients in eight different categories, and each one carries a 50,000 euro prize and an original sculpture by Joan Miró. Last week, Spanish singer and composer, Joan Manuel Serrat (80), won the first award in the Arts category.
The Princess of Asturias Prizes will officially be handed out over a series of months before forming the climax of the adornment ceremony with King Felipe VI in Oviedo in late October.
