Following violent assault, probationary sentence. - Man with Knife (28 years) chuckles at his Target (39 years) in Courtroom
Luis A., a 39-year-old from Thuringia, bears the mark of six scars on his upper body. Last Thursday, he encountered two of his attackers in front of the Jena District Court. The men behind the knives just gave him a smirk as if they couldn't care less.
Luis A. had greeted the start of 2022/2023 in the Jena city center. His life took a turn for the worse when he walked down Johannes Street, where he spotted the Iraqi Kovan A. (28), who had threatened him with a knife earlier. Determined to make peace, he approached his assailant and offered him a smoke. But things quickly took a turn for the worse when he tried to grab his lighter.
"I had wanted to share a moment with him, to smoke together," Luis A. recalls. "But as soon as I reached for my lighter, he launched an attack." In the chaos of the fight that followed, a second attacker stabbed Luis A. in the back. The group disappeared, but both were caught that night. Among them was Syrian Shvan R. (24), who had a folding knife.
New Year's Day found Luis A. in the hospital, reeling from panic attacks and suffering from an anxiety disorder and social phobia. He had to give up his position as a shop detective and security guard.
Insulting mockery
"I'd rather forget that day," Luis A. wishes. But the two charged with aggravated assault, Kovan A. and Shvan R., seem unbothered by their actions. They strutted into the courtroom with full-blown grins and thumbs raised. Kovan A., a construction worker, even entered the courtroom unaccompanied by a lawyer.
They both deny the knife attack and don't even remember it. An apology? Forget it! Judge Klaus Lichius hands down justice in this case, but the outcome fails to satisfy Luis A. "Fortunately, they didn't hit my lungs or my spine," he says, "But for someone to repeatedly stab another, that's not the justice I had hoped for."
Finding solace in nature
As for his assailants, Kovan A. was given a year's probation and a 2,000 euro fine, while Shvan R., a former convict, was acquitted.
Luis A. has found solace in bird photography. "That's where I feel most at ease now. When I look through the lens of my camera, I'm at peace," he shares.
