Penalty for murder accusation only mild - Man receives 4.5-year sentence for murdering his tormentor.

The brutal incident that took place on July 5, 2023 is hard to compare in terms of cruelty. Sven H. (53) had his skull and cervical spine shattered with five violent blows from a cleaver axe. Each swing by itself would have been lethal.

Sven H. used to be a young coach to René K., who was molested by him as a child - causing abuse that even included rape. René K. never revealed these atrocities to anyone, though he later became a soccer coach at FSV Zwickau and other clubs.

Haunted by his childhood trauma

Following a car accident in 2011, René K. suffered a blow to his memory, forgetting his entire past life. He was plagued with nightmares where a man was abusing him. A friend then mentioned the later victim, who had a history of sexually abusing children.

René K. tracked down his former coach. At their second encounter, he found an axe. He claims to not recall the precise moment he perpetrated the crime.

A psychologist described during the trial that René K.'s amnesia, prompted by the accident, was a consequence of his earlier abuse. When he met his former mentor, the trauma surfaced and René K.'s consciousness became disrupted, resulting in his gruesome actions.

Judge Jörg Burmeister (51): "This was not a premeditated murder fueled by hatred, there's nothing in the crime scene that suggests so. René K. himself was in disbelief of his actions. It's suspected that he was affected and had lost consciousness during the incident. Moreover, there's the history of his amnesia."

The defense modestly sought an acquittal, while the prosecution favored a sentence of life imprisonment. The judgment is yet to be declared final.
