Major League Baseball finishes deal with Sportradar.
MLB partners with Swiss sports data provider Sportradar AG to professionalize its global sports betting offering. This partnership, effective from March 20, will make Sportradar the official global data partner for Major League Baseball (MLB).
The multi-year agreement allows Sportradar to analyze real-time match statistics and distribute them to various sports betting partners. The company will also receive exclusive distribution rights for international markets outside the US and make the data available to media companies. Furthermore, Sportradar will be responsible for distributing live feeds for audiovisual games according to the respective industry standards of each country, both inside and outside the US.
In 2016, Sportradar had already obtained the rights to distribute MLB AV data to various betting partners; however, this deal expands their partnership globally as a result of the US-wide sports betting legalization in May last year. While MLB does not exclusively distribute data through Sportradar, the league has signed other agreements with authorized data partners.
Sportradar will work with MLB to develop and distribute new products that expand the MLB fan base and generate global interest in the sport of baseball. The two will use Sportradar's "Integrity Services," which include a patented fraud detection system and access to MLB's educational and investigative services, to ensure game and betting data security.
MGM Resorts, a casino giant, became MLB's first official sports betting partner in November. As a result, they are now collaborating to establish a dedicated baseball set for MGM Japan and open a world-class resort, with plans for an inaugural series in the Tokyo Dome. MLB is leveraging its partnership with MGM to expand its presence in Japan, the largest baseball market in the world. Spokespersons from MGM suggest further marketing activations are in the works for this partnership.
Known as the world leader in data distribution, Sportradar aims to capitalize on its background in sports data analytics to create more secure and engaging wagering products for MLB fans.
On the other hand, MLB Vice President of Gaming and New Business shared his enthusiasm for this partnership. He said, "High-quality, reliable, and fast official data feeds are the foundation for creating engaging wagering products for our MLB fans. Sportradar is a major industry leader in data distribution and is the perfect choice to help us deliver an exceptional official MLB betting feed."
The collaboration not only focuses on fan engagement but also on ensuring the integrity of baseball worldwide. MLB will leverage Sportradar's Integrity Services, which include a fraud detection system and educational and investigative services. MLB CEO, Carsten Koerl, sees this as an opportunity to enhance Sportradar's position in the growing sports data market. The CEO commented, "This is a great opportunity for Sportradar to assert itself in the challenging field of data analytics, and ultimately opens new doors for safety and integrity for MLB fans."
In conclusion, the partnership between MLB and Sportradar marks a step towards a stronger and more professional global sports betting offering, with a focus on data distribution, product development, and integrity. Through their collaboration with MGM, these companies aim to expand MLB's presence in international markets, particularly Japan.
