Maine Family Faces Tension over $1.3 Billion Mega Millions Jackpot
It seems that the infamous "lottery curse" is rearing its ugly head for the victor of Maine's largest lottery jackpot, wreaking havoc on the relationship between the winner and his loved ones.
The enigmatic $1.35 billion Mega Millions winner is suing his ex over accusations of divulging the news of his windfall without his permission.
Now, Smith, the former partner, has counterattacked, claiming misconduct on Doe's side. Meanwhile, the winner's father declares that he is no longer the son he once knew.
The Legal Sequel: Doe vs. Smith
In court papers, the former couple are given the pseudonyms "John Doe" and "Sara Smith" due to Maine's law permitting lottery winners to retain anonymity.
In November 2023, Doe filed a lawsuit against Smith, asserting she violated a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) when she informed his dad and stepmom about the jackpot. The NDA was instituted to "promote the safety and security of John Doe, defendant, and their daughter and avoid the irreparable harm of allowing the media or public, in general, to discover" their identities and whereabouts, as stated in the lawsuit. Doe requests an injunction forbidding Smith from divulging any more information about the prize and demands she list every person she informed, along with paying compensatory damages of "an amount to be determined at trial, but no less than $100,000 per unauthorized disclosure."
Strife and Disharmony
However, recent developments in the case show Smith and the winner's father accusing Doe of disclosing the jackpot to his parents. Additionally, Doe had asked his father not to communicate with Smith, causing a division between the two men.
"I told him... 'You're not the son I knew,'" said the father in court documentation. "He got furious, calling me a 'dictator' and a 'dickhead.' I haven't heard from my son since, and he hasn't carried out any of [the] things he promised."
Smith asserts in a recent court submission that Doe has employed a security team that purportedly trails her and her child daily.
On the other hand, Doe charges that Smith is trying to reveal his identity. He also claims she falsely accused him of attempting to "kidnap" their daughter because he refused to foot the bill for her and her new love interest to get away for a vacation.
