Bundesliga: Germany's top-tier football league - Maier disagrees with Hoeneß over Rangnick's appointment: "Unusual sensation"
Famed goalkeeper Sepp Maier is unsure about coach Ralf Rangnick potentially leading FC Bayern, expressing doubt and hesitation over his suitability for the role. The record German soccer champions are currently courting Rangnick, who desires a significant amount of authority and detailed control.
Speaking to Sport1, the 80-year-old stated, "This saga has gone on too long. Rangnick wants a lot of power and everything to be clear-cut. I have a strange feeling about it, somehow."
Discussing the preferred candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel, Maier declared, "Rangnick isn't it. To be honest, I'd even try to keep Tuchel. It may sound crazy, but I understand his methods."
Tuchel will prematurely end his contract with Bayern at the season's conclusion, as previously agreed weeks ago. With Xabi Alonso (Leverkusen) and Julian Nagelsmann (national team coach) rejecting Bayern's offers, Rangnick now assumes the top position as a successful Bundesliga coach and current manager of the Austrian national team. He is currently weighing his options.
Beyond the coach search, a disagreement between honorary president Uli Hoeneß and Tuchel is creating turbulence within the team. Hoeneß accused Tuchel of dismissing the development of young players and only inviting new professionals. Tuchel fervently opposed this claim and seemed hurt by the accusation.
Maier remarked, "If that's the case, then Uli was mistaken for a change. Tuchel has demonstrated his ability to develop gifted players into accomplished ones many times. Therefore, Hoeneß's criticism is slightly off-base."
Tuchel is a "great and accomplished coach" who has the opportunity to triumph in the Champions League. If he manages to achieve this, Maier emphasized, "then he'll show every critic the error of their ways."
Simultaneously, the world, European, and German champion, long-standing goalkeeping coach was taken aback by Hoeneß's timing. "As with any of Uli's jabs, the reaction is subjective. However, the timing of this one was unusual, especially before the clash against Real Madrid. Naturally, the players will pick up on it and talk about it."
