Luxury Vehicles Reportedly Stolen Frequently at Harry Reid Airport

Recently, multiple Cadillac Escalades and other similar vehicles were swiped from parking facilities at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, according to KLAS television station. The authorities are on the hunt for those responsible.

Las Vegas Metro Police Department has been probing the theft of roughly ten vehicles from the parking complexes over the past couple of weeks. One car owner experienced even worse luck, receiving a text notification about an unauthorised individual opening their car door. However, a GPS service couldn't later pinpoint the location where the stolen vehicle had been taken.

When inquired about the situation by KLAS, airport spokesperson Joe Rajchel said, "This is an ongoing investigation, and any further questions should be directed to LVMPD."

You can find the cost of a brand new 2024 Cadillac Escalade or Escalade ESV starting from $83,890 to $154,290, as per Car and Driver magazine. These luxury vehicles have also been reported stolen in other parts of the country like Florida.

The Las Vegas authorities have already experienced vehicle thefts in the airport garages in the past. The year 2022 saw several cars being snatched, KLAS said. To prevent these incidents from happening, the airport added surveillance cameras and licence plate scanners in their parking garages. There are also security guards who regularly patrol the premises and occasionally conduct inventory checks on the cars in the parking facilities. Nonetheless, cars still get stolen despite these protective measures.

A former employee suggested introducing more bicycle patrols in the airport's parking areas as a way of thwarting the thefts, KLAS informed.

A rather shocking event occurred at Harry Reid International Airport in 2022 when a body was discovered in a Subaru parked in a short-term parking area in Terminal 1 garage. This unfortunate incident lasted for 23 days, with the smell of decay being the reason for airport staff getting the authorities involved. Although an investigation revealed that the 65-year-old woman apparently committed suicide, questions were raised about the airport's security measures.

In previous conversations with KLAS, the airport mentioned various strategies they have put in place to monitor vehicles left in their garages. Rajchel stated, "There are many layers of safety in place to keep an eye on the vehicles. We have people who go through at night to check the license plates that are here, to keep track of what vehicles are on property."

Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has also been witnessing an influx of stolen vehicles this year, with over fifty-dozen incidents reported at the parking areas in just over eight weeks. This is a significant leap from the number in the preceding year when only 11 cars were stolen during that same period.

Travelers can protect themselves by following these suggestions:

  • Always lock their car
  • Don't forget to take their keys and parking ticket with them
  • Hide their valuables wherever possible
