In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Low German Weeks, happening until mid-June, recently commenced with a thunderous cannon shot in Dömitz. To celebrate the "18th North German Day," the organizers set up an exciting event centering around the Low German language. The gathering in Dömitz Fortress included a variety of arts and crafts markets and diverse entertainment, such as music, dance, and performances of the Low German tongue. The Concordia Shooting Society of 1848 from Rostock, known for their boisterous firecracker group, also made their presence felt on the site. Moreover, the Dömitz school campus participated, as stated by a spokesperson for the local heritage association. The school is part of the six Low German profile schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The following events are set to occur during the 4th Low German Weeks, under the patronage of Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD). The announcement of the "Low German Word" 2024 will happen on June 1st during a symposium in the castle of the Reuterstadt Stavenhagen. The 10th "Plattdüütsch-Bäukerdag" (Book Day) will be on June 8th at the University of Rostock's Botanical Garden, where a range of Low German publishers and various activities are available for visitors of all ages.

The year 2024 holds extra significance as it marks the 150th anniversary of Fritz Reuter's (1810-1874) death – a renowned Mecklenburg-Vorpommern writer, artist, and democrat. Celebrating his works, creations, and reception is a highlight for the region. To honor this, the Prerow Week of Low German Language will be happening from June 10th to 14th. "We're thrilled that many individuals involved in the fourth year of the Low German Weeks have strategically planned this period," stated Martin Buchsteiner, the chairman of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Heritage Association. "This allows us to showcase our dedication towards the preservation of the Low German language throughout the country."

The "Festival up Platt" with puppet theater, music, and an exhibition will run from June 10th to 14th in Greifswald. Finally, the Low German Weeks will end with the Malchow Monastery Night on June 14th, a Low German network meeting at the district agricultural museum in Dorf Mecklenburg on June 15th, and theater performances and several Low German church services on June 16th.

Low German is considered a regional language, differing from a mere dialect. It’s used in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg and Bremen, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, as well as in the northern parts of Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony-Anhalt.
