Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern warns against phishing and scams
Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has issued a warning about fraudulent calls. Criminals are posing as employees of the lottery company with the intention of pressuring the called parties to make payments and obtain sensitive customer data and payment information.
Fraudsters pretend to offer a lottery subscription over the phone
The German lottery company Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is currently warning about fraudsters who are deceiving call recipients into believing they have unwittingly signed up for a lottery subscription. The criminal callers are posing as employees of Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or a lottery center.
The fraudsters are telling the called parties that they have signed up for a long-term lottery subscription for lotteries like 6 aus 49 and Spiel 77, which involves monthly payments (direct debit from a checking account). However, they claim that there is an option to cancel the subscription extraordinarily with a one-time payment to avoid recurring payments.
Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has also strongly advised against making payments to the fraudsters or disclosing personal data. In case of doubt, the called parties can contact the customer service of Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern directly.
Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern does not contact lottery players by phone
Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also makes it clear that the lottery company does not contact lottery players by phone to discuss contractual contents, collect personal data of the players, or process cancellations.
Contact with lottery players would only be made in writing for such purposes. Changing the bank details can also only be done in writing. It is strongly advised not to share sensitive information with unknown callers over the phone.
Lotto Mecklenburg-Vorpommern did not provide specific details on whether a particular age group is more affected. However, in the past, fraudulent calls have primarily targeted older individuals.
Lotto phone fraud also occurs in other German states
In the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, there have also been attempts at fraud over the phone regarding an alleged lottery subscription in recent years. The Consumer Center Rhineland-Palatinate also warned about fraud attempts over the phone. Criminals are demanding amounts between 70 € and 90 € to supposedly cancel a lottery subscription.
However, there are also other fraud schemes. Victims are promised a large lottery win over the phone, but they are told they need to make payments upfront. Transaction fees of foreign banks, lawyer's fees, or customs duties are often cited as reasons.
It is strongly advised not to make payments or share sensitive data over the phone. Lottery players can contact the customer service of the German lottery companies with any questions.
In Germany, scammers often target online casinos, using deceitful tactics to lure players into sharing sensitive information. Therefore, it's crucial to be vigilant when playing online casinos in Germany, ensuring you only provide your data to trusted and legit platforms.
Unfortunately, numerous incidents of phone fraud involving lotteries, similar to those experienced in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, have also occurred in other German states like Rhineland-Palatinate. Thus, beware of unsolicited calls claiming to be from online casinos or lotteries, as they might be attempts to exploit players and steal their personal information.
