Lotto Hessen celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2023 with a new milestone - a record revenue of 747 million euros.
Lotto Hessen reached a new milestone in 2023, raking in approximately 747.5 million euros. A significant chunk of their annual income still comes from brick-and-mortar outlets in Hesse, according to the company. This year marks Lotto Hessen's 75th anniversary.
Fresh High for Lotto Hessen
In a press statement released on May 14, Lotto Hessen revealed an outstanding year in its 75-year history. The record revenue of 747.5 million euros marked a 0.3% growth from the previous year. In 2023, there were well over 70.7 million gaming orders in the state of Hesse:
The dream of hitting the lottery jackpot is a part of our everyday life for many people in Hesse; it might be even more essential than ever in these unstable times." - Martin Blach, CEO of LOTTO Hessen GmbH, Lotto Hessen
Each Hessian citizen spent roughly 117 euros on participating in lotteries, making Hesse the federal state with the highest annual per capita turnover among all German lottery companies. The national average for 2023 was 97.20 euros.
Lotto Hessen expects positive numbers in the current year as well. Sales have seen a 4% rise when compared to the same period last year. The company is optimistic about breaking the 750 million euro mark on its 75th anniversary.
Making 21 Folks Multi-Millionaires
Last year, Hesse's surging sales produced 21 new millionaires. Most of these lottery tycoons hail from Offenbach and Main-Taunus districts.
Lotto Hessen's biggest prize, valued at 22.5 million euros, was won in September by a player of Lotto 6aus49.
The company doled out 403.8 million euros in winnings last year. This sum was shared by 24.2 million winners.
Unclaimed Lotto Prizes
It's not uncommon for lottery winnings to remain uncollected. In Hesse, 2.9 million euros that were won in 2023 are yet to be claimed by their rightful owners. Lotto Hessen attributes these to anonymous players who haven't registered:
Regrettably, about 50,000 euros of the tips received each week don't get collected. Most of these are minor prizes, which is also a shame, but last year also saw a large win among them. - Martin Blach, CEO of LOTTO Hessen GmbH, Lotto Hessen*
One individual won a whopping 304,888.80 euros in the Eurojackpot in 2023. This mystery player has yet to come forward and contact the lottery company. The ticket is valid until 2026.
Lotto Bayern is also currently grappling with a similar situation. They're on the hunt for the winner of 1.5 million euros, who won the million on April 23.
Top Lotteries in Hesse
Lotto Hessen shared the favored games among Hesse locals. The most preferred game is Lotto 6aus49, accounting for 41.3% of their total revenue. In 2023, Lotto Hessen made 308.6 million euros from Lotto 6aus49 sales.
Eurojackpot is another highly sought-after game in Hesse, generating 25.9% of Lotto Hessen's sales. This is a 7.1% increase from the previous year. The increase in popularity is credited to the introduction of a second draw on Tuesdays, making the lottery more appealing.
Instant lottery ranks the third most popular lottery in Hesse, be it scratch cards or online games. The instant lottery contributed to 11.8% of total sales in 2023, totaling 87.9 million euros. The interactive games witnessed a 7.4% sales hike in 2023.
Strong Turnover at Sales Outlets
Lotto Hessen maintains a fleet of 1,970 sales outlets. They are key channels and play an important role, particularly in rural areas. In October 2023, Lotto terminals were introduced in three Netto stores in Hesse. These physical outlets account for a significant portion of the company's total sales. Lotto Hessen recently approved a 2 million euro support package for 2024.
At the same time, the lottery company acknowledges the rapid growth of digital channels. One in five Lotto Hessen bets are now being placed on digital platforms. In 2023, online sales saw a 9.4% surge, accumulating 141.5 million euros.
