Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert breaks another finger
Things remain dire for the Los Angeles Chargers as quarterback Justin Herbert suffers his second finger injury this season.
Herbert broke his left middle finger in a Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury was to his non-throwing hand and Herbert did not miss any time.
In Week 14, Herbert broke his throwing right index finger in a loss to the Denver Broncos. He will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine how many games he will miss or if he will miss the remainder of the season.

The Raiders will take on the Chargers in Week 15 on Thursday Night Football. The Chargers are -4 favorites in the forward line. Oddsmakers don’t expect Herbert to play in just over a week, which is why the Raiders are currently a -3 favorite.
The Chargers (5-8) have all but been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. According to Upshot's playoff projections, the Chargers have less than a 1 percent chance of earning an AFC wild-card spot.

Herbert’s 62-game winning streak in jeopardy
Herbert, 25, has not missed a game since becoming the Chargers' starter during his rookie season. He has started 62 consecutive games, the second-longest such streak among NFL quarterbacks, trailing only the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen, who started 84 consecutive games. .
Herbert suffered a fractured rib cartilage early in the 2022 season but overcame the painful injury and did not miss a game last year.

Stick, a former FCS champion out of North Dakota State, has been a backup for the Chargers since they drafted him with a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Stick is a legend in Fargo and still holds the record for most wins by a starting quarterback in an FCS game. He compiled a 49-3 record as a starter for the North Dakota State Bison from 2015 to 2018. He succeeds Carson Wentz at quarterback and is Trey Lance's predecessor.
I haven't played in a while, but it's part of the job," Stick said. "I've been here five years. I watched Justin and Philip Rivers play and they played really well. That's the standard. I just go out there and try to keep up and do the best I can. "
If Herbert is unable to play against the Raiders on Thursday in Week 15, Stick will make his first start. Stick has never had a chance to play, as Herbert hasn't missed a game since becoming the starter in 2020.
Stick completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards in his only game of the season against the Broncos.
With the Chargers trailing 17-0 in the fourth quarter, Stick scored the team's only score. He had back-to-back catches with rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston, including a 57-yard catch. The Chargers marched 94 yards in five plays, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Austin Ekeler. The Chargers cut the deficit to 17-7, but the Broncos scored again and won 24-7.

All signs point to Staley being fired after a disappointing season. Staley must lead the Chargers to the playoffs to keep his job. With a talented young quarterback like Herbert, the Chargers will have no shortage of hopefuls to become their next head coach.
