Los Angeles Chargers fire head coach Brandon Staley after loss in Las Vegas

The Los Angeles Chargers fired head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tommy Telesco the next morning following an embarrassing 42-point loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night.

The Raiders defeated the Chargers 63-21 on Thursday night in Sin City. The Raiders were -3 favorites and easily made up the spread with a 42-point win.

The Chargers do not have quarterback Justin Herbert or wide receiver Keenan Allen on the roster due to injuries. Backup quarterback Easton Stick had just a week to prepare against a division rival, but the rest of the Chargers didn't step up and seemed to give up in the first quarter.

The embattled Raiders are starting rookie backup quarterback Aidan O'Connell and are without running back Josh Jacobs in the lineup due to a quadriceps injury.

The Raiders fired head coach Josh McDaniels after a 3-5 start to the season. The Raiders are 3-3 since interim head coach Antonio Pierce took over.

The Chargers dropped to 5-9 this season and currently sit at the bottom of the AFC West. They're 5-9, one of the worst betting records in the NFL this season.

Staley: The Walking Dead Before Week 15

The Chargers wanted to fire Staley last offseason after leading the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-0 in the playoffs. With a few years left on his contract, the owners decided to give him another chance. If the Chargers can win a playoff game this season, Staley will likely keep his job.

The Chargers are having another disappointing season when Herbert went down with a season-ending injury last Sunday. Herbert suffered a broken index finger on his throwing hand and underwent surgery. The Chargers were on the verge of missing the playoffs before Herbert's injury, but they were doomed when he missed the rest of the season.

The Chargers wanted to wait until the end of the season to replace Staley, but that was before the embarrassing loss in Las Vegas. Team owner Dean Spanos had seen enough and fired Stely and Telesco.

"I want to thank Tom and Brandon for their hard work, dedication and professionalism and wish them and their families the best," Spanos said in an official statement. "These decisions are never easy and I These decisions are not taken lightly - especially considering how many people they impact. However, we are clearly not where we should be and we need a new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity is not what I want Risk taken.”

Staley succeeded former head coach Anthony Lynn in 2021 and posted a 34-34 record in his first head coaching job.

“Our fans have been through so many ups and downs and close games,” Spanos added. "You deserve more. Honestly, they deserve more. Building and maintaining a championship-caliber program remains our number one goal."

The Chargers never recovered from the 27-0 defeat

Last January, Herbert looked poised to earn his first career playoff win. They jumped out to a 27-0 lead before the Jaguars fought back and defeated the Chargers 31-30 on Wild Card Weekend.

The Chargers hired Kellen Moore as their new offensive coordinator this offseason and are in a good position offensively. Their defense was shaky early in the season and gradually deteriorated. Their first five games have all been decided by one point, and eight games this season have been decided by one point.

The Chargers are allowing 24.6 points per game and are the sixth-worst defense in the NFL. Their porous secondary is averaging 261.4 passing yards per game, fourth-worst in the league. Opponents are averaging 375.3 yards per game this season, with only three other teams allowing more.

Staley, the former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator, was considered one of the NFL's most defensive-minded coaches when he accepted his first head coaching job with the Chargers. Industry insiders were baffled by the move, as a coach with more offensive experience would be better suited to mentor the young and talented Herbert.

Despite Staley's strong defensive heritage, the Chargers' defense has not performed well during his tenure. The Chargers held the Raiders to 63 points on Thursday night, which was the final nail in Staley's coffin.

Who wants to coach the Bolts?

Despite having a ton of potential vacancies, the Chargers have no problem finding a head coach because they have a superstar quarterback in Herbert.

There are a lot of rumors in New England that owner Robert Kraft will part ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick after the season. Belichick has been linked to both the Chargers and Washington Commanders.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Commanders' Eric Bieniemy and Miami Dolphins' Frank Smith top the list of potential head coaches. Both offensive gurus would be happy to work with Herbert and vice versa.

If the Chargers want to make a hire within the organization, they could turn to Moore. Moore is the current offensive coordinator but lacks head coaching experience. If Spanos names Moore interim head coach, Moore will be eligible to apply for the full-time job during the final three weeks of the season.

Jim Harbaugh has had to deal with several scandals with the Michigan Wolverines this season. His days in Ann Arbor may be numbered, but if Michigan doesn't win the College Football National Championship in January, Harbaugh could be back in the NFL next season.
