UEFA Champions League - Loan players Sancho and Maatsen of BVB face an uncertain fate.
Will Sancho and Maatsen remain with Borussia Dortmund after their temporary stints? This is the question hanging over two loan players, Jadon Sancho from Manchester United and Ian Maatsen from Chelsea FC, who signed with Dortmund last winter. Considering the costly transfers demanded by their parent clubs, a permanent move might be an unlikely scenario for both.
However, we can expect to see them in the starting lineup for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday at 9 pm (DAZN).
Sancho may have a slightly better chance of becoming a regular player at Dortmund. Disappointed with life as a reserve in England, the 24-year-old has found happiness playing for his former club. However, he is yet to regain the form he showcased prior to his €85 million transfer to Manchester United in 2021. "Both I and Jadon can vouch for the fact that he isn't yet performing at his absolute best," said Edin Terzic.
Sancho's potential is applauded by Terzic, who finds the former Dortmund winger's talent exceptional. Terzic also noted the evident improvement in Sancho's work ethic and commitment to training.
Reports suggest that Dortmund intends to offer Sancho another loan deal. This would entail a significant reduction in his estimated earnings of around €20 million in England.
Maatsen, on the other hand, looks set to leave Dortmund. While he had a strong start to his career at BVB, he could not maintain his performance, and FC Bayern has allegedly shown interest. Acquiring Maatsen might cost Dortmund around €38 million.
Regarding his possible departure, Maatsen was less explicit, commenting on the uncertain summer, "I don't know what will happen then. There will certainly be several options." He debunked rumors he had informed Chelsea officials that he didn't want to return, "No, I didn't do that."
Despite Maatsen seeming destined to go, his father, a fellow professional, is hopeful that his son will stay. "We're working on him staying at the club," said Edward Maatsen. "The clubs need to sort this out. Ian is growing well with us as an intermediary step."
