In place of honorary citizenship - Leverkusen secures a spot for Alonso.
Two weeks ago, there was a political hiccup that prevented the honorary citizenship for Leverkusen's champion coach Xabi Alonso (42). However, the people of Leverkusen have still found a way to honor their idol.
Now, Leverkusen has a "Xabi Alonso Square." This cam about through the efforts of the youth center "Bunker" in the city. Over 60 children spent several weeks turning the courtyard into a tribute to their favorite coach. They worked with cement, sewed flags, and painted the square in red and black to create a monument for their hero.
At the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday afternoon, there were many excited young Bayer fans, as well as two Leverkusen legends - Jens Novotny (50, 295 Bayer games) and Stefan Kießling (40, 444 Bayer games, 162 goals). Former star striker Kießling commented on the Xabi Alonso pitch, "This is great! It's nice to see that the children here have ideas and can put them into action with support. Xabi has accomplished a lot in the past few months. I've been here a few times and know the square from before. It's very well-designed, more colorful than before, and Xabi is in the spotlight."
Kießling went on to say, "This championship year is something very special, and many people have played a part in it. There are multiple ways to remember people. Whether it's a street or a large painting. But others will think about that."
The idea for the Xabi Alonso square came from the children at the youth center. One morning at breakfast, they decided to build a square in honor of the master coach. The head of the "Bunker," Reiner Hilken, said, "Crazy ideas need to fall on fertile grounds, and we're prepared for them. We have to make the children's dreams a reality, and social participation is also essential."
Xabi Alonso has been well-loved by all Bayer fans for a long time. And now, he has an actual place in Leverkusen to show for it.
