A blaze erupts in Riegelsberg. - Lethal casualties reduced to ashes.
Around 1:45 AM, the fire department received an alert. A possible cause was an earlier explosion, but this has not been verified. Alternatively, the noise could have come from the fire itself as it spread through the building.
Upon arrival, the two-story house was engulfed in flames. A spokesperson from the fire department stated, "The building was on fire."
One person managed to escape before the house caught on fire.
Flames were seen erupting from the first floor at the front of the building, while the fire spread to the upper floor at the rear.
To assist in extinguishing the fire, the power lines of the two Saarbahn lines had to be shut off. Neighboring buildings were also evacuated as a safety measure.
A burnt body was discovered on the first floor, and a female relative was provided with emergency counseling on-site. Apart from the couple, no one else was legally registered to live in the house.
The cause of the devastating fire is still under investigation. A THW building consultant is currently examining the building's structure before it can be entered.
The Saarland police's criminal investigation department took over the investigation into the fire's origin during the night, and approximately 80 rescue workers were deployed.
