Official law enforcement officers are investigating a situation. - Law enforcement personnel feel more secure wielding taser weapons.
In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, police officers have been employing Tasers for approximately two years. These devices seem beneficial in reducing instances of violence against law enforcement officials, as acknowledged by a representative of the state police department. The technical evaluation is positive. Officers reported feeling more secure and confident in their actions. Particularly compelling was observing how the behavior of suspects de-escalated when Tasers were present.
A trial period spanning from May 2022 to September 2023 involved officers from the 1st police station in Neumünster, Ahrensburg police station (Stormarn district), and a special task force. During this time, they deployed stun guns 35 times. In only two instances were the Tasers actually fired, and no individuals were injured. In most cases, the mere threat of using the Taser was enough to handle the situation. After the completion of the pilot project, no additional statistical data has been maintained. However, it's been confirmed that no Taser discharges directed at people have occurred since then.
The state acquired a total of 35 Tasers, costing approximately 225,000 euros, as shared by the Ministry of the Interior. The police in northern regions employ the Taser 7 model manufactured by Axon. In critical situations, this device can generate a deterrent electric arc or aim two wires laden with electrodes at the attacker, causing incapacitation through electric shocks. Each electric pulse lasts for five seconds. The Tasers have the capability of producing current pulses sustaining up to 50,000 volts, similar to firearms regulations.
The 4th police station in Kiel is set to receive stun guns during the second or third quarter of 2024, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
