Transport of goods by sea. - Latest effort for salvaging a steamboat in Lake Constance
A second attempt to rescue the renowned steamship "Säntis" from the depths of Lake Constance is underway. Romanhorn's Swiss Ship Salvage Association President, Silvan Paganini, reported that preparations have been completed. If everything goes according to plan, the ship will be lifted from 210 meters to a depth of 12 meters between Saturday and Sunday. The 'Säntis' has had its final depth and time revealed, but it will initially be moored off Romanshorn.
The ship had been considered unseaworthy in May 1933 and was sunk in the middle of the lake between Romanshorn and Langenargen. Scrapping it was turned down as too costly. The 147ft-long vessel has been a staple on Lake Constance since 1892, and could accommodate 400 passengers.
A previous salvage operation failed in mid-April due to technical troubles. However, the association promised that repairs on the wreck had been effectively completed this time.
The "Säntis" will be slowly hauled up from the water using suspension ropes with lifting bags, before being transported away under the direction of the association. It will then be kept in twelve meters of depth at first, and later hauled up further. The ship is expected to be preserved and displayed in a museum, possibly.
The ship salvage association, founded in 2023, has done well in its crowdfunding initiatives for this operation. Now, they prepare to lift the steamboat that has been undersea since 1933. This Swiss-based organization is non-profit and has a membership of over 40 people. A grand amount of €250,000 has been raised so far for the extraction process.
