Las Vegas Tourism Officials Work on Establishing Nonstop Flights from Japan

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) continues to work towards attracting an airline to offer direct flights from Japan to Harry Reid International Airport in Southern Nevada.

The LVCVA is responsible for promoting Las Vegas as a top tourist and business destination. During a recent board meeting, it was revealed that the LVCVA seeks to add direct service to Japan. LVCVA chair Steve Hill shared that when a city obtains non-stop flights, demand typically doubles. Currently, travelers must connect at least once to fly from Tokyo to Las Vegas. With Japan's casino projects moving forward slowly, Nevada officials are eager to attract the country's high rollers.

Before the pandemic, the LVCVA was on the verge of announcing direct flights to Tokyo. The pandemic, however, halted this possibility for a period of time.

"We were almost ready to announce a direct flight to Tokyo right before the pandemic hit," Hill said on Tuesday. "The pandemic eliminated that possibility for a while."

Hill continued, saying that conversations with potential airlines were ongoing and that direct service to Japan will likely happen within the next couple of years.

Among the possible contenders for providing non-stop flights from Tokyo to Harry Reid International Airport are United Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Japan Airlines.

Increased Passengers

Harry Reid International Airport recently recorded its busiest year in terms of passenger traffic, with 52.7 million passengers passing through. This is a 2.2% increase compared to the previous record of 51.5 million in 2019. Despite the upward trend, international traffic was still notably lower than in 2019, with around 2.5 million passengers traveling internationally.

A recent aviation consultancy review suggested that the airport may surpass its current passenger traffic record this year and could soon exceed its capacity. Joel Van Over, senior director at Ailevon Pacific, claimed that Las Vegas' airport was the fastest to recover from the pandemic among major airports worldwide.

Significantly, the airport now offers 161 direct routes from 25 airlines, both historical highs for the facility.

Baccarat's Recovery

The return of international tourists can be traced by observing baccarat revenue, a popular game among Asian high rollers. Nevada casinos reported a record $14.84 billion in gaming revenue last year. Baccarat showed significant recovery from its pandemic lows, with a GGR of approximately $1.17 billion. This is a 25% increase from its 2021 win and almost double the $604.3 million won during the challenging 2020.

Baccarat's best year in Nevada was 2018, when tables won over $1.2 billion.
