Las Vegas teen charged with murder of student, claims self-defense
Four of the nine teenagers allegedly involved in the fatal attack on a Las Vegas high school student said they acted in self-defense.
Attorneys in the case claimed last week that the victim, not the defendant, threw the first punch during the fight in an alley near the Rancho High School campus. The attorney also claimed the murder victim's boyfriend was armed with a knife, Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported.
Jonathan Lewis Jr., 17, was fatally kicked and beaten on Nov. 1, leaving him defenseless on the ground and a gang of students even stomping on his head, authorities said.
Lewis died after being treated in the intensive care unit of University Medical Center. He had been on life support for days before his death. An autopsy revealed he died of blunt force trauma to the head and other body parts. "
Defendant tried as an adult
The Las Vegas court judge hearing the case denied bail to the four defendants. They are Damian Hernandez, Jenny Robinson, Dontrell Beaver and Trevion Randolph. Each is charged with second-degree murder.
The defendants, all 16 or 17 years old, are being held in a juvenile detention center although they are being tried in adult court. Five other juveniles arrested may also be charged as adults. A tenth possible suspect was arrested. All 10 suspects attended Rancho High School, authorities said.
According to KLAS, the fatal beating began over stolen wireless headphones and possibly a vape pen. According to USA Today, a group of teenagers stole the items from a young child and threw them in the trash.
Lewis decided to protect his little friend, but was soon attacked.
