Las Vegas private plane crashes in California fog, killing 6
Six Southern California residents were killed when a private plane taking off from Harry Reid International Airport crashed Saturday near French Valley Airport in Murrieta, California.
The victims were identified as:
Abigail Tellez-Vargas, 33, of Murrieta Riese Lenders, 25, Rancho Palos Verdes Manuel Vargas-Regalado, 32, Temecula Lindsey Gleich, 31, of Huntington Beach Alma Razick, 51, Temecula Ibrahem Razick, 46, Temecula
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, at approximately 4:15 a.m. Saturday, a 1979 Cessna C550 business jet that took off from Harry Reid Atlantic Air Terminal at approximately 3:15 a.m. Crashed 500 feet north. The airport is far.
The jet, owned by Prestige Worldwide Flights LLC of Imperial City, Calif., was on its second approach due to heavy fog. The pilot was allowed to land using only instruments.
"The pilot reported to air traffic control that he was conducting a go-around, which typically occurs when the pilot cannot see around the runway," National Transportation Safety Board investigator Elliott Simpson told reporters.
The jet, which can carry up to 13 people, burst into flames and sparked a bushfire. The fire was contained shortly after 5:30 a.m. and nearly an acre of vegetation was burned, the Riverside County Fire Department said on Twitter.
Six people on the boat were found at the scene and pronounced dead, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Saturday morning's accident came four days after a man died when his plane crashed after taking off from the same airport.
