Las Vegas police officer shoots and seriously injures suspected kidnapper in Las Vegas

A suspected kidnapper is fighting for his life after he was shot by police on Las Vegas' East Side early Friday morning.

The unnamed suspect was taken to University Hospital in critical condition around 2 a.m.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, two passengers in an SUV belonging to the kidnapping suspect were also taken to the hospital. Details of her injuries and condition are unclear at this time.

Boulder City Kidnapping Location

The incident occurred at approximately 12:43 a.m. Friday in Boulder City, Nevada. Officers from Boulder, a city about 26 miles southeast of Las Vegas, contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) about an active kidnapping, Las Vegas television station KLAS reported.

According to Las Vegas TV station KSNV, they say Boulder City police received a text message about 20 minutes ago from a woman saying she had been kidnapped by a suspect.

Shortly thereafter, police spotted her vehicle near Highway 95 and Black Hills Drive in Boulder City. The driver saw police approaching and sped off, sparking a pursuit of the vehicle.

After the vehicle left Boulder City, Las Vegas police took over the pursuit and forcibly stopped it near Owens Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard in Las Vegas around 2 a.m. Details of the violent interception were not initially disclosed.

Gun pointed at victim

An altercation ensued between the armed suspect and police. At one point, while still in the vehicle, the suspect pointed a gun at a victim inside the SUV. This prompted an LVMPD officer to shoot and wound the suspect.

Emergency crews administered first aid to the suspect at the scene before transporting him to a hospital.

According to LVMPD Captain Joshua Martinez, there were four people in the SUV during the confrontation, including the suspect.

It's unclear if the kidnapping victim was one of the people inside the car, Las Vegas TV station KTNV reported.

The crime scene is about five miles east of Strutt Casino. An investigation into the incident forced the closure of East Charleston Avenue between South Lamb Avenue and Arden Street starting Friday morning.

As of Friday, LVMPD police had not released details of the reported kidnapping, and the officer who fired the weapon was not immediately identified.

This incident is the third LVMPD officer-involved shooting so far in 2023.

Whenever an officer-involved shooting occurs, the officer's actions may be reviewed using standard protocols used by LVMPD.
