Las Vegas once again named America's 'siniest city', citing greed and lust

Las Vegas is known as "Sin City" for a number of reasons, and new research shows Nevada's largest metropolis continues to live up to its name.

Researchers at personal finance site WalletHub released their 2023 ranking of "America's Siniest Cities" on Monday. Not surprisingly, Las Vegas ranked number one out of the 182 cities analyzed.

Las Vegas topped the list with a "vice index" score of 63 out of 100. Houston is second with 57 points.

WalletHub considers five components when determining each city's crime rating. These include "wrath and hatred," "envy," "excess and sin," "greed" and "lust."

Las Vegas ranks 1st for greed, 4th for lust, 12th for envy, 31st for anger and hatred, and 84th for excess and sin.

Las Vegas tops this year's list of sin cities. The city has a 24-hour nightlife and numerous casinos that will make you forget what time it is and how much you can bet. Plus, Sin City has no shortage of adult entertainment options, not to mention extensive buffets, spas to soothe your inner laziness, and more,” the WalletHub co-report concluded.

North Las Vegas ranks 15th among the most sinful cities. Henderson and Reno also rank high, at 25th and 27th respectively.

All media is good media

While some cities might be outraged by being named America's sinister city, Las Vegas won't be keeping sleepless nights over the honor. Sin City has been ranked the most sinful city by WalletHub every year since WalletHub first compiled the Sin City list in 2016.

Scott Roeben teased the ranking last year, calling WalletHub a "prestigious research organization." Robben, a Las Vegas insider who runs the popular VitalVegas account on X, said being named the "Siniest City" is a "high honor." Roeben said that WalletHub rankings have more to do with driving traffic to his site.

WalletHub said it compared Sin City rankings to help people considering moving make "positive life changes." This includes "improving their financial situation or giving up their bad habits."

WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said Las Vegas isn't the only city that should receive special scrutiny for those seeking to escape vice and sin.

"Las Vegas topped the Sin City rankings this year, but other cities gave Sin City a run for its money," Happe said. "While Las Vegas keeps its greedy and over-the-top crowds in check, the rankings Second-place Houston offers nearly as many options for those looking to indulge their lustful desires, thanks to its high concentration of adult entertainment options. On the other hand, third-place Philadelphia residents have long sought out plastic surgery options, which Maybe it’s a sign of their vanity.”

Las Vegas Real Estate Market

Despite continuing to be known as America's Siniest City, the Las Vegas real estate market is still booming.

The median sales price for a single-family home in Las Vegas in October was $449,000, up more than $100,000 from October 2020, when the median price was just $340,200.

High interest rates have slowed the market somewhat, with home sales falling nearly 7% in October compared with September.
