Las Vegas officials release facial recognition of body found in barrel in Lake Mead
Lake Mead's infamous "bodies in the barrel" now has a face. Clark County and Las Vegas police hope this will eventually lead to a name. The face was created by the FBI using facial approximation software at a laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, according to a Clark County press release.
National Park Service officials discovered the body in May 2022 near Port Hemingway.
Police believe the victim died from a gunshot wound to the head and was stuffed into a barrel before being transported by boat a few hundred meters away to Lake Mead and dumped.
Judging by the clothing still hanging from the body, police concluded the murder took place between the late 1970s and early 1980s. This fits perfectly with the evil reign of crime boss Anthony Spilotro.
Tony Ant is known to have been the inspiration for Joe Pesci's character in Martin Scorsese's 1995 film Casino. He was murdered in 1986.
All other remains will be identified
The body in the barrel is the only one of four in Lake Mead that has not yet been identified by the coroner's office.
The remains found on July 25, 2022, were identified in April 2023 as that of Claude Pensinger, 52, a Las Vegas resident who disappeared on July 14, 1998.
The remains discovered on Oct. 17, 2022, belonged to Donald P. Smith, 39, of North Las Vegas, a drowning victim missing since April 1974.
The remains found in Lake Mead on May 7, 2022 belong to Thomas Erndt, a 42-year-old Las Vegas resident who drowned.
Anyone who recognizes the face in the newly generated images is asked to email the Clark County Coroner’s Office at [email protected]. Case number is 2022-02725.
