Las Vegas hotel workers, drivers call off strike ahead of Super Bowl

Two planned strikes in Las Vegas were averted thanks to successful last-minute negotiations. Both events threaten the large crowds watching Super Bowl XVIII on Sunday.

Over the weekend, the Culinary Union abandoned a Monday morning strike threatened by casino workers. It comes after union representatives approved a tentative five-year contract with the Downtown Hotel and Casino Sunday night. Nearly 200 regular hotel staff have yet to ratify the agreement.

The Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas also reached a tentative agreement with the Culinary Alliance this weekend.

Union negotiations continue with Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the last local hotel without a contract with hotel workers.

"As negotiations continue to progress, the Culinary Union and Bartenders Union have decided to give Virgin Las Vegas more time and we expect to reach a resolution on a new contract in the coming weeks," said Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge said in a statement over the weekend.

Historical Offers

The Culinary Alliance has reached "historic" agreements with several other Las Vegas hotel and casino companies in recent months.

These negotiations were difficult, requiring more than two years of preparation, ten months of negotiations, a lot of hard work, committee meetings, sleepless nights and worker-led organizing,” Papachi recalled in a statement.

Culinary alliance members and management of the Fremont Hotel & Casino, Rio Hotel & Casino, Main Street Station Casino, Brewery & Hotel, Binion Casino & Hotel and Four Queens Resort & Casino also signed preliminary agreements last week. Five-year contract. This comes shortly after a deal last year averted a Culinary Union strike against Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts in November, just days before the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas .

According to the contracts signed with the three companies, each employee will receive a 10% salary increase in the first year of the contract. You will receive a 32% salary increase over the life of your contract.

Recent developments at other properties are believed to have similar provisions. Other worker benefits include daily cleaning, automated guarding and improved safety.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 have approximately 60,000 members. This includes bartenders, janitors, cocktail and food servers, cooks, housekeepers, laundry and kitchen workers, and porters.

Transport Contract

Local bus drivers and bus mechanics have also threatened to strike ahead of the Super Bowl.

Transdev, which operates public bus service for the Southern Nevada Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1637 have been negotiating a deal for months. The latest tentative agreement still requires approval by about 1,200 rank-and-file union members.

A strike by RTC riders could cause chaos for many of the 330,000 spectators expected to watch the big race.

The Super Bowl takes place on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. There are a lot of relevant events happening this week.
