Las Vegas guests find bed bugs at seven hotels - report

According to recent media reports, bedbugs have been found in seven prominent Las Vegas hotels over the past two years.

Hotels include Circus Circus Hotel, Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, The Palazzo, Tropicana Las Vegas, MGM Grand and Sahara Las Vegas, Las Vegas TV station KLAS announced on Friday.

An alleged nuisance animal situation was reported after news outlets searched Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) records.

In June, for example, bed bugs were discovered in a room at the Planet Hollywood hotel. In February, bed bugs were discovered by a guest at the Tropical Garden Hotel in Las Vegas. In January, a tourist was bitten at Caesars Palace.

Last year, there were more complaints.

In October 2022, a guest at the Sahara killed bed bugs in his room. In June 2022, bed bugs were discovered in a room at Circus Circus.

In January 2022, a hotel guest was also bitten by bed bugs at Circus Circus. That same month, bedbugs were discovered in a room at the MGM Grand. They were also reportedly spotted at the palace that month after a guest complained of being bitten.

Generally speaking, such situations are relatively rare at Las Vegas hotels, authorities said. Hotels monitor and respond to the presence of bed bugs and other pests in hotel rooms.

Tropicana Hotel, for example, said in a statement on Saturday that it regularly conducts a "comprehensive preventive maintenance program" - with the health and safety of its guests being the hotel's top priority.

While unlikely, should a complaint occur we will immediately quarantine the affected room and surrounding area. At that time, external service personnel will assess the situation and make recommendations on appropriate next steps, including professional treatment if any problems are identified. ” said Arik Knowles, Vice President and General Manager of Tropicana Hotels.

In a further statement to Las Vegas, Sahara said: "Although it is extremely unlikely, our immediate response protocols ensure that any issues are successfully resolved."

MGM Resorts added in a statement to KLAS: "We have comprehensive procedures in place to address and resolve any issues that may arise."

There was no immediate comment on the other properties mentioned in the article.

More information about bed bugs

Bed bugs are called "cimex lectularius" in Latin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes them as “small, flat, parasitic insects that specialize in feeding on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep.”

They are usually reddish-brown in color and range in size from 1 mm to 7 mm. Bed bugs often live in cracks and crevices.

According to the CDC, the cleanliness of a room has nothing to do with the presence of bed bugs. This risk may be more relevant to visitors from areas of the world where they are more common.

Bed bugs are common in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and Europe," the SNHD website states."Bed bug infestations are steadily increasing as international travel increases. "

Bug List

In the past, many hotels in Las Vegas have been accused of having bed bugs.

In May 2021, Vital Vegas released a report titled “The Worst Bed Bug Hotels in Las Vegas.”

Based on 673 online reviews collected by Pest Strategies between 2008 and 2020, the Las Vegas resorts with the worst bed bug problems (with the worst at the top of the list) were determined to be:

Excalibur Bali's Flamingo MGM Grand Hotel Luxor Planet Hollywood Venetian Rio Paris Caesar Palace

Another list was published in May by HotelFandB.com magazine. It is based in part on a list from the Bed Bug Registry. Winners include Travelodge by Wyndham, Excalibur Hotel and Casino, Stratosphere Hotel, Casino and Tower and Luxor Hotel and Casino.

Bed bugs aren't just found in Las Vegas, they can be found elsewhere as well. In 2021, a Memphis, Tennessee, woman sued MGM Resorts for $3 million. She claims that in 2018, they stayed in two separate hotel rooms at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. It's unclear what happened in the case.

Guest Policy

Hotel guests can take precautions. To protect your clothing from infection, keep your luggage in the bathroom or luggage rack until you check the bed. Store the bag with a zipper.

When inspecting the bed, pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress and bedding on the couch.

Experts recommend checking your bed for insects, blood stains and small black spots.

Also check if there are any odors in the room. Bed bugs release a pheromone that produces a musty smell.

Notify management

SNHD recommends that guests "notify the front desk immediately" if they suspect bed bugs are in their room. You will usually be assigned to another room.

“Most good hotels have a bed bug control program,” SNHD adds.

According to "Vital Vegas", some Las Vegas hotels even employ specially trained bed bug detection dogs to prevent bed bug infestations.
