Las Vegas' Delano Hotel Uncovers Financial Forgery Scheme

A 44-year-old man was apprehended recently after officials found a counterfeiting operation at the Delano Las Vegas hotel. According to a news article, Michael Was was taken into custody when security personnel discovered a "forgery lab" in two rooms he had been staying in.

Was was charged with establishing a financial forgery facility with the intention of committing a crime, mail theft, and possessing a document or personal ID to commit forgery or counterfeiting. Furthermore, he faced charges of being a prohibited individual carrying a firearm and having controlled substances.

During the search, security guards found pills, hypodermic needles, and suspected methamphetamine (meth) in his possession. They also took a gun away from Was.

A background check by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) revealed that Was had been previously convicted in Nevada. The charges included a 2008 conviction for burglary and a 2016 conviction for establishing or possessing a financial forgery lab, forgery of a credit or debit card, theft, and forgery, as mentioned in the article.

Several Items Seized in the Raid

Authorities uncovered other significant items during the raid, such as blank checks, card printers, 12 stolen or forged credit cards, an embosser, an ID card printer, laminating sheets, paper cutters, passports, tax forms, and other materials used in the fraud.

Was' notebook contained details about the individuals involved in the forgery operation. Moreover, an electronic credit card reader and counterfeit keys for post office boxes were also found, though it was unclear whether the fake IDs were made for locals or those from outside the area, or if they were meant for underage people or would be used for identity theft-related crimes.

The Delano is a boutique hotel run by MGM Resorts situated within Mandalay Bay. The hotel's security team started investigating Was after realizing that the card he had used to book the rooms didn't belong to him. This led them to search two adjoining rooms and eventually arrest Was on August 11.

He posted an undisclosed bail and was later released from the Clark County Detention Center, as mentioned in a Las Vegas TV station's report. Was has a trial scheduled for February 15, 2023. If found guilty, he could face several years in prison.
