Las Vegas cyclist suspected of being hit and killed by drunk bus driver

A local bus driver is suspected of a hit-and-run crash after he allegedly ran a red light and struck a man on a bicycle in Las Vegas on Friday. The cyclist died from his injuries.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal identified the driver as Johnelle Johnson, 46. Johnson is scheduled to appear in a Las Vegas court on Saturday on DUI and traffic charges.

She was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after the accident. Johnson remained in jail early Saturday.

The cyclist was transported to nearby Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, doctors there pronounced him dead.

The 33-year-old victim was not immediately identified. The Clark County Coroner's Office will confirm his identity and notify his family of the death. His body will likely undergo an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police did not initially release a description of the man's injuries.

Fatal Crash occurred around 2:56 p.m. Located near the intersection of East Tropicana Boulevard and South Nellis Boulevard in southwest Las Vegas.

Passengers on the bus

Johnson was driving an RTC bus eastbound when the accident occurred. Passengers on the bus were not injured, Las Vegas television station KLAS reported.

After running a red light, Johnson rammed the bus into the left side of the cyclist, KLAS reported. The cyclist was hit by the bus while crossing the street, the Review-Journal reported.

He rides a BMX-style bicycle.

ALLEGED SIGNS OF DAMAGE

When officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) arrived at the scene, they found Johnson showing signs of being intoxicated, authorities said. The Collision Investigation Division, a specialized division of the LVMPD, continued to investigate the fatal crash Friday night.

It was unclear whether Johnson underwent field sobriety tests or was tested for other substances. There is no information yet on whether Johnson was placed on administrative leave by the RTC following the accident.

Friday's crash is the 133rd traffic fatality LVMPD has investigated so far this year.

Johnson is employed by the Southern Nevada Regional Transportation Commission (RTC). The agency provides public bus service to Las Vegas.

The RTC was approached for comment. There was no immediate comment.
