Las Vegas Casino Union Pledges Support for President Joe Biden's Re-Election

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226, Nevada's largest labor organization based in Las Vegas, is gearing up for President Joe Biden's re-election campaign. This union, affiliated with Unite Here, represents about 60,000 workers in non-gaming roles such as housekeepers, waitstaff, cooks, bellhops, and porters in the state's casino industry. Demonstrating their strong support for Democrats, they have consistently endorsed the Democratic ticket with minimal exceptions.

As the US presidency hits the ballot box this November, Culinary leaders are determined to ensure Nevada plays a part in keeping Biden in the White House. The union claims to have contributed significantly to Nevada's recent blue-leaning streak in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, marking the first time in 44 years that Nevada's residents did not correctly predict the presidential winner.

This week, Ted Pappageorge, the secretary-treasurer of Culinary 226, spoke with the French news agency AFP, discussing the union's plans for this election. "By November 3rd, we'll have 500 union members - men and women who usually spend their time cleaning rooms in hotels, cooking food, or serving drinks - out full-time, going door to door, registering people to vote, and helping them get to the voting booth," he elaborated on the union's canvassing endeavors. Without a doubt, Pappageorge believes that the only way to win an election is by turning out the vote.

As in previous election years, union dues will be used to pay for canvassers to temporarily leave their jobs to head out and knock on doors. "They sign up for three to six months during an election year. They walk the neighborhoods every day, 10 hours a day, in 110°F weather. Workers talking to workers. That's how we sway the working-class vote in Nevada," the union leader explained.

Pappageorge mentioned that the majority of Culinary members are in favor of women's reproductive rights, as well as strict immigration policies with a compassionate touch and a stronger economy. He attributed the current economic difficulties, like the increase in the cost of household essentials, to former President Donald Trump's leadership style. The union executive believes that Trump mishandled the pandemic, ultimately harming Nevada's middle class.

Trump's campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, asserts that they will counter any attempt by the Democrats and Culinary Union to sway voters. She stated to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "We have paid staffers and volunteer-powered field programs in every critical state, including Nevada, and they are expanding every day. Our determined and seasoned operation is focused on mobilizing voters and showcasing the contrast between Joe Biden's weakness and ineffectiveness and President Trump's record of achievement."

The prediction of political analysts suggests that seven states will have a significant role in determining the 2024 ultimate winner between Biden and Trump. These states are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Nevada. The current polling average via Real Clear Polling favors Trump by 3.2 points compared to Biden in Nevada. The former president also has acceptable leads in the other swing state polls, with the exception of Pennsylvania, where Biden maintains a meager 0.5-point edge.

In spite of the more than 200 days remaining until election day, British bookmakers have Trump slightly ahead with +100 odds, while Biden's chances are slightly longer at +110.
