Las Vegas approves pedestrian bridge across North Boulevard
Clark County commissioners on Tuesday approved a pedestrian bridge at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. The bridge will span Convention Center Boulevard and the Las Vegas Strip, connecting Resorts World and Wynn Las Vegas diagonally.
Resorts World proposed a public-private partnership to build the bridge under a similar 2007 development agreement between the county and Boyd Gaming, which planned to build the $4.8 billion Echelon Place on the same site.
During the Great Recession, Boyd sold the property for a reported $350 million to Genting Group, which began building Resorts World in 2013.
"We are excited to move forward with the next steps for this pedestrian bridge and are grateful to the county commissioners for approving the project," Lavoie said in a statement. "As foot traffic increases and more businesses relocate to the area, efforts like this are important to the development of the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, and we are proud to contribute in this way."
Cross the bridge early
This is the second new pedestrian bridge under construction at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. Earlier this month, the Las Vegas City Council approved a contract with Innova Technologies to review the design of a $40 million Jetson-style pedestrian bridge at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Boulevard.
The city could approve or reject the proposal based on review, but did not provide a timeline for when the project would be submitted to developers for bid.
The bridge may no longer be needed in the area, which has seen a significant increase in foot traffic since the opening of Fontainebleau Las Vegas on December 13, the first time since the opening of Resorts World Las Vegas on June 24, 2021 The first new casino resort on the Strip.
According to the city of Las Vegas, there were 595 accidents at the Sahara intersection on the Las Vegas Strip between 2009 and 2018, resulting in two deaths and 326 injuries.
The next step for the Resorts World Bridge is to reach an agreement with the Clark County Public Works Department.
