Restaging Northern Germany's historical events: - Kiel promoted to the Bundesliga!
Kiel seals their first-ever promotion to Bundesliga, making them the first team from Schleswig-Holstein in the top league. Their 1:1 draw against Düsseldorf was enough to guarantee them one of the top spots.
There's no way Fortuna can knock Kiel out of their top positions on the final matchday. The Storks are unstoppable and are flying high into the Bundesliga.
The celebration in Kiel is ecstatic! And it almost felt like a celebration in St. Pauli too! A win for Kiel would've secured their promotion to second place before their game against Osnabrück on Sunday, while St. Pauli still needs a point to confirm their own spot.
Kiel had a lightning start with Pichler heading a Rothe cross into the net within two minutes, giving them a 1:0 lead (2'). The game saw a flurry of activity as fans celebrated, set off fireworks, and even substitutes ran onto the pitch.
An exciting moment arrived when a collision between Klaus and Weiner led to Vermeij quickly reacting to head the ball towards goal. Erras jumped in the way, deflecting the ball with his outstretched arm. It was a clear handball (4th), but referee Jablonski did not give a penalty. Later, even after the VAR review, he kept his decision.
Kiel had fewer shots (12:3), but their attempts were more dangerous. Bernhardsson missed a golden opportunity to make it 2:0 (36'), which would've cemented their spot.
After the break, a VAR review prompted referee Jablonski to award a penalty in favor of Düsseldorf as Holtby had brought down Niemiec. Tzolis converted from the spot to equalize (70').
The draw confirms Düsseldorf's safety in third place, but they still have a chance at direct promotion if St. Pauli loses to Magdeburg and Fortuna loses to rivals HSV. Otherwise, Düsseldorf will have to go through the relegation matches, facing the 16th-placed team in the Bundesliga (currently Union Berlin) on May 23rd/27th.
