Beatrice Chebet, a 24-year-old Kenyan athlete, broke the world record for running over 10,000 meters by nearly seven seconds at the Diamond League event in Eugene, Oregon, USA. With a time of 28:54.14 minutes, she became the first woman to run under 29 minutes in this event.
The previous record, held by Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey, was 29:01.03 minutes, which she set on June 8, 2021. In the same race, Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay finished second with a time of 29:05.92 minutes.
Chebet first achieved international success at the World Championships in 2019, when she won silver in the 5,000 meters at the Eugene venue. A year later, she placed third in the same event at the World Championships in Budapest. This year, Chebet plans to focus on the 5,000 meters at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. Her last 10,000-meter race was in Nairobi back in 2020.
