Kentucky sports betting registration to begin this month
Online sports betting in Kentucky won’t open until the end of September. However, officials said Thursday that residents will be able to sign up for accounts by the end of the month.
"The countdown is on. There are only three weeks left until sports betting in Kentucky," Gov. Andy Beshear (D) said at a news conference Thursday. “We stand ready to deliver the quality entertainment experiences that the people of Kentucky have demanded, while providing funding to the state to support pensions and free up funds that can be used to build a better Kentucky.”
Seven online sportsbooks submitted license applications earlier this month: Bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, Circa, DraftKings, FanDuel and Penn Sports Interactive. Kentucky’s sports betting laws allow for up to 27 online licenses, including three for each of the nine racetracks.
Seven racetracks have submitted applications for brick-and-mortar sports betting: Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ellis Park in Henderson, Oak Grove Gaming and Racing's Oak Grove, The Red Mile in Lexington, Turfway Park in Florence, and two more are set to open soon 's racetrack, Corbin's Cumberland Run and Ashland's Sandy Games and Racing.
Winner will be decided next week
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will decide which operators to approve at its Aug. 22 meeting. Registration for approved online sportsbooks will begin on August 28.
Bluegrass State Wagering begins a week later on September 7th, but only at on-site facilities. Belchar, a nonpartisan advocate for sports betting laws, said he was proud to place his first bet on the first game day of the NFL season.
Online sportsbooks can begin accepting customer deposits from September 7, but actual bets must wait three weeks until September 28.
Phase Implementation
Kentucky is taking a phased approach to implementing new sports betting laws. This was done to test the policies and procedures of land-based sportsbooks before the mobile app starts accepting bets.
KHRC is pleased to open sports betting and is working efficiently to meet the necessary deadlines," Chairman Jonathan Rabinowitz said in a statement. "This has been a thorough process , designed to ensure betting integrity and protect Kentucky bettors. "
Officials estimate Kentucky will generate $23 million in annual tax revenue once the sports betting law is fully implemented. The tax rate for online sports betting is 14.25%, while the tax rate for land-based betting providers is 9.75%.
Kentucky will transfer 2.5% of proceeds to the newly created Problem Gambling Fund.
