Kambi signs agreement with Mohegan Sun
Malta-based bookmaker Kambi has partnered with the Connecticut-based gaming company Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort for a multi-channel sports betting deal, officially launching both an online and on-property sportsbook at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.
Expanding in the US Market
This agreement significantly enhances Kambi's presence in the newly regulated US sports betting market, with the initial phase planning to integrate Kambi's sports betting system onto Mohegan Sun's iPro Gaming platform to provide a free-to-play sports betting product for familiarization purposes. The partners aim to transition into real-money services once the government regulations permit.
Kambi's CEO, Kristian Nylén, states that the purpose of introducing free-to-play betting is to allow Mohegan Sun Casino customers to become acquainted with sports betting products before being able to bet with real money.
As of now, the states of Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi have regulated sports betting laws, with more states likely to follow. According to Nylén, Connecticut, a state with around 3.6 million residents, is anticipated to regulate sports betting by the second quarter of 2021. While there is some legislative review taking place, he has no doubt that the authorities will approve the regulations. Nylén intends to use this development for further growth, adding:
"With Mohegan Sun, we're not just working with one of the two largest casinos in Connecticut, but also one of the leading gaming and entertainment destinations in the entire country, which serves as our ideal foundation."
Absolutely, Kambi has forged several new partnerships recently to boost its US growth. A deal with the renowned Parx Casino in Pennsylvania was signed in January, and a partnership with Pennsylvania casino operator Rush Street Gaming was agreed upon in December 2018.
Mohegan Sun: A Native American Gaming Company
Since Mohegan Sun suggests an indigenous company, this is indeed the case. Mohegan Sun was established in 1996 by North American natives. The 300,000 square meter casino in Connecticut offers a range of land-based casino services, a world-famous poker room, and various leisure and entertainment options. It has grown into an essential landmark for Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), also managed by Native Americans.
As Mohegan Sun and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe are the only two Native American gaming companies in Connecticut allowed to offer gaming, any future sports betting legislation would require the development of an exclusive contract to allow a statewide rollout.
Strategic Partnership with New York City FC
It's clear that the US sports betting market, valued in billions, has sparked fierce competition since PASPA's repeal. In this context, a strategic partnership between Major League Soccer club New York City FC and Mohegan Sun was unveiled in mid-March. The collaboration is under the banner, "Money you can't buy," and seeks to provide new gaming opportunities for both sports fans and bettors once New York enacts the appropriate legislation.
Consequently, Mohegan Sun will be the first official gambling partner of a US soccer team. The partnership even includes the opening of a sports betting and entertainment lounge at the club's home stadium.
NYCFC's partners were excited about the deal, with Mohegan Sun Vice President of Interactive Games, Aviram Alroy, specifically highlighting the advanced technology of Kambi's sports betting product. Alroy stated in a press release that Mohegan Sun is excited to complement their program:
"Mohegan Sun's intention is to harness our brand and strong presence in our state. After thorough consideration, we've found that Kambi is the market leader. Their sportsbook is the best available."
The fight for the most profitable market shares on the other side of the pond continues. It's unclear if the MLS can now join the likes of the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB, who are known as the Big 4 in the US sports scene. We'll have to wait and see. Similarly, it's uncertain what will happen with the local sports betting market.
