Jury prize at Cannes festival won by Iranian filmmaker Rasoulof.
The honor recognizes a career marked by battles against the authoritarian Iranian government. It's a bittersweet achievement for Rasoulof, as it also signifies the start of a life in exile. "I hold no intentions of returning to Iran right now," Rasoulof shared with AFP in Cannes.
Inspiration for his award-winning movie emerged during his most recent incarceration in Iran during summer 2022. This coincided with mass demonstrations sparked by the death of Kurdish girl, Masha Amini, in custody.
His flight from Iran ignited enthusiasm among attendees of the Cannes Film Festival. Just before the festival in the southern part of France, Rasoulof contacted from an undisclosed location and thanked his supporters, one or two of whom put their lives on the line to aid his escape.
Employed through Germany, where his daughter is a student, Rasoulof eventually reached Cannes and received a rousing welcome. He exhibited positivity that Iranians would someday be able to "breathe easily" again. "The Iranians are infuriated and they're seeking a chance to display their frustration," he said.
