Joe Biden's Las Vegas trip focuses on bullet trains and victims of Nevada Las Vegas University shooting
President Joe Biden was in Las Vegas on Friday to announce $3 billion in federal aid for high-speed rail between the city and California.
The 218-mile rail line will connect Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, California. The city is located approximately 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. After completion, the route is expected to carry more than 11 million passengers per year.
The route plan has been negotiated for several years. The suggestion has been made since Nevada Senator Harry Reid took office. But after decades of waiting, Biden promised unionized carpenters that high-speed rail between Vegas and Los Angeles would finally be built.
"Harry Reid, I told you 35 years ago to get rid of that fool," Biden said, looking to the sky to remember the late senator."We can do this."
Biden recalled being stuck in traffic on the highway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas as a "head-scratcher." The journey can take up to seven hours. However, once the rail line is operational, the journey will take about two hours and reach speeds of up to 186 miles per hour.
The project means more tourists will come to Las Vegas. Biden told the crowd it would bring more jobs and money to the region.
The train is expected to be in service before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This makes it easier for crowds to travel to Las Vegas.
Memory of the Victims
During his visit, Biden met with University of Nevada, Las Vegas administrators and students after three professors were shot to death on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus this week. Biden paid tribute to two campus police officers who shot and killed the attacker before more victims were injured or killed.
The victims included Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, of Henderson, Nevada; Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, of Las Vegas; Vegas Naoko Takemaru.
Biden also called for more laws against gun violence.
