Remarkable achievement recounted. - Jobless but trained, now the one in charge!
Previously, he just worked as an excavator driver. When he bought his own mini-excavator, he started his own venture in Hoffmann Construction Machinery GmbH. He could use it for digging trenches or foundations. However, space was soon a problem. In 2010, Hoffmann purchased an old recycling site in Bernau. "This enabled us to grow and expand," he reminisces. Currently, he manages two recycling yards in Bernau and Ladeburg. In Oschersleben, he operates a service and sales center for construction machinery.
Overall, the family-run business has over 200 machines. There are also trucks and transporters. "I'm just drawn to big machines," states the 47-year-old excitedly. It's possible that he inherited this passion, as his father, who is 74, still occasionally plops onto a bulldozer.
Soon, the manager's greatest wish will finally come true: His employee, Tobias Menz (41), has brought the OstBau trade fair for the construction industry to life. Although there was a smaller trial run last year, the fair is now happening on a grand scale.
"We hope for 6,000 visitors - coming from the construction industry. We also want to provide young people the chance to try out construction machinery," explains the fair's director. Hence, both small excavators and massive cranes can be tested on site.
Though he no longer needs to be the boss to do it, Jens Hoffmann still operates bulldozers, excavators, and trucks. "I'll feel every position if needed," he says. He has remained humble and his favorite machine with a less grounded size is, "Our 100-tonne crawler excavator. I just love the sheer size of it."
