Numerous fatalities reported following a blaze in Rafah. - Israel initiates inquiry following air assault.
On Monday, the Israeli military initiated an investigation into the incident where the Hamas-governed Palestinian Health Department stated that 45 individuals lost their lives and several more were wounded.
Images taken from the AFP news agency depicted the remains of makeshift tents and automobiles that had been burned.
"Despite our attempts to avoid harming them, a tragic incident occurred. We are currently examining the situation," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) on the said day. "For Israelis, it's a tragedy. For Hamas, it's part of their strategy."
The Chief of Staff of the IDF, Major General Jifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, commanded the General Staff's investigation and evaluation unit to scrutinize the attack. She categorized the Rafah attack as a "extremely grave" event.
"In a war of this magnitude and intensity, such serious incidents are bound to occur," Tomer-Yerushalmi said on Monday. "Some of these incidents, like the one yesterday in Rafah, are particularly severe." The IDF regrets whenever non-combatants are endangered.
The association "Doctors Without Borders" voiced their dismay: "We are horrified by this deadly incident, which yet again illustrates that there is no safety anywhere in Gaza."
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) directed Israel to halt its military operations in Rafah on Friday. Nothing should be done to result in the "total or partial destruction" of the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The World Court's utmost authority did not demand a disarmament ceasefire for Gaza. Decisions of the World Court are legally binding. However, the judges of the UN do not possess the power to implement these rulings.
Notable Hamas terrorists killed
According to the Israeli military, the air raid in Rafah's Tal al-Sultan neighborhood killed Jassin Rabia, the Hamas leader in the West Bank, and the leading Hamas terrorist Khaled Nagaar. Both were bodies behind the planning and financing of attacks and held the lives of Israeli soldiers in their hands.
The Palestinian Red Crescent stated on Monday that the targeted location was among the designated humanitarian zones for people who had been displaced due to Israeli military operations.
However, the Israeli army claimed that the air strike did not happen within the safety zone established for evacuated Palestinians northeast of Rafah.
