Upcoming release: Fall-bound book with its title confirmed. - Is Merkel admitting the truth now?

On the cover, you'll see an upbeat former Chancellor looking off in the distance. These memoirs are set to be released in over 30 countries and claim to provide "detailed glimpses into the thoughts and deeds of one of the most prominent female leaders in recent history," according to publishing director Kerstin Gleba from Kiepenheuer & Witsch.

Despite this claim, a minor drawback is that the book only covers Merkel's experiences from 1954 to 2021, which is right before Putin's aggression against Ukraine, the sabotage of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and the energy crisis. It also wraps up during her nuclear phase-out decision in 2011, done with the intention of keeping the Greens out of power in Baden-Württemberg (unsuccessfully).

The book itself, priced at €42 for a physical copy and €29.99 for an e-book, will be published by Cologne-based Kiepenheuer und Witsch. Merkel personally wrote it, or at least dictated it. Beate Baumann, her former office manager, assisted her as a co-author.

Merkel shares her description of her work: "I'm thrilled to reflect on key decisions and events from my political career in my book, written with Beate Baumann, and make them more accessible to the general public by including my personal history as well."

A surprisingly straightforward statement. Nothing like what Merkel would normally say. It leaves us optimistic that she'll communicate her 68 years of memories in a more digestible way than she has at press conferences.

Merkel's memoirs will be published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch on November 26

The publisher is ecstatic about marketing this international bestseller - not just in Germany and Europe, but "in the USA and Canada" as well, as Gleba enthusiastically mentions.

What does it say exactly?

The publisher mentions that Merkel's 700-page book "reveals her personal history more intimately than ever before, recounting the story of her childhood, youth, and studies in the GDR and the historic year of 1989, when the Wall fell and her political career began." This book offers a "rare perspective into the workings of power and is a strong endorsement of freedom."

And we're meant to wait over six months for this? Mrs. Merkel, how will that work? Possible response: We can manage it...
