Disagreements or Clashes Occur - Inquiry underway for Ukrainian victim in two-case homicide.
In response to the murder of two Ukrainian soldiers found in Murnau, Upper Bavaria, a formal investigation is underway. The Public Prosecutor General's Office initially refused to comment on specifics behind the classification of this as a double murder incident. A spokesperson revealed on Tuesday that the primary goal of the ongoing investigation is to unravel the events leading up to the crime and establish the motives involved. "We wish to avoid any preconceptions of the outcome."
The 23-year-old and 36-year-old victims were both stabbed to death at a shopping center in Murnau, Upper Bavaria, on Saturday evening. Police apprehended a 57-year-old Russian man, who may be connected to the crime, shortly after the incident. It is believed that the police confiscated a knife from his residence, similar to the one likely used in the crime.
A recent police statement mentioned that the arrest of the accused happened peacefully. The man had been in Germany since 1990 and had a significant history of violent offenses reported to the police. As per the progress of the investigation, it appears that the victims and the suspect had known each other previously.
Politicians began commenting on the situation as early as Sunday. Murnau's mayor, Rolf Beuting (ÖDP), mentioned that clues indicated an alcohol connection, while Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) reported witness testimonies suggesting all parties had been drinking. Herrmann added, "While we don't yet have clear proof it was prompted by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it's certainly possible."
Due to the political context of the victims being Ukrainian soldiers receiving medical attention in Germany, the case was handed over to the public prosecutor's office on Monday. It has become a politically sensitive matter regardless of any potential political motivations behind the crime.
