Initial rollout: Geolottery introduced in Baden-Württemberg

"Logeo" is a new game concept launched by Lotto Baden-Württemberg. Instead of betting on number combinations, players participate in a draw using the coordinates of their home address. The prize money from the initial draw will be given to Stuttgart.

This is not your typical lottery where you choose random numbers with the possibility of more than one draw without a winner. In the geolottery, a winning address is randomly picked from all the coordinates submitted. The top prize is 100,000 euros. The remaining prize categories are divided among the participants within the main winner's neighborhood. The idea behind this neighborhood lottery is "win one, win many."

Since the prize is determined by the coordinates of the neighborhood, there will always be at least 1337 winners in each draw. Even if no one guesses the correct coordinates, a group of over 1,300 participants still wins something. While there's no opportunity for increasing jackpots, 20,000 euros are distributed to the participants in different prize categories based on the proximity to the winning address. The closer you are to the main winner, the higher the prize category.

For their first draw, Stuttgart was selected as the city with the lucky address. The last of the 1,337 5-euro prizes was awarded to an address just 5.6 km away from the main winner. A total of 37,181 tickets were submitted, and each participant received a 5-euro prize. Unfortunately, the exact coordinates of the winners are not shared to maintain privacy.

Interestingly, players can only use their home address as a betting slip, so the odds of winning the main prize equal the number of coordinates submitted. Therefore, smaller groups of players have a better chance of winning a single entry.

For each winning lottery, a portion of the proceeds goes to charities. The charity a player selects depends on the coordinates of the main winner. 5,000 euros are donated to a chosen local project suggested by the lottery company. Right now, only Lotto Baden-Württemberg offers a geolottery, but similar offers are in the works for Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria, and Saarland.
