Increased Smoking Zone at Florida Tribal Casino in Response to Patron Requests
While attempts to ban smoking in casinos continue in various state capitals, a Florida-based tribal casino is opening a new area where guests can smoke and gamble 24 hours a day.
The Miccosukee Tribe, one of two federally recognized tribes in Florida, owns and operates the Miccosukee Casino & Resort in Miami near the entrance to the Florida Everglades on US Highway 41/Tamiami Trail.
Although the casino has a small smoking room with a few slot-like electronic bingo machines near the Cyprus Lounge and M Sphere Rewards player's lounge, the tribe plans to open a significantly larger dedicated space for smoking this summer.
Brad Rhines, general manager of the tribal casino, said they take their customers' feedback seriously and aim to meet their needs. Many patrons have requested a new, indoor, dedicated smoking area, and Rhines is proud to announce this will soon become a reality.
The smoking space will feature a "sophisticated design" and feature an "upscale bar," according to Rhines. A post on the tribe's social media about the casino's smoking room mentioned that the area will include 117 gaming machines.
Gaming License
The Miccosukee Tribe has decided not to enter into a revenue-sharing Class III gaming compact with the state government, meaning they don't have permission to operate Las Vegas-style slot machines, live dealer table games, or sports betting at their casinos. By not signing the compact, they can keep all the gaming revenue generated in their tribal gaming properties.
In addition to the Miccosukee Casino & Resort, the Miccosukee Tribe opened a gaming plaza in the Everglades called the Little Trail Casino in February. This smoke-free facility has 150 electronic bingo machines and amenities such as a gas station, convenience store, 12 Tesla charging stations, a Dunkin', and a cafe.
At Miccosukee Casino & Resort, the tribal casino offers nearly 1,800 electronic bingo machines, a bingo hall, a 20-table poker room, 302 hotel rooms, four dining options, event space, live entertainment, and access to their nearby 27-hole golf facility. The casino also includes a tobacco shop.
Smoking at Tribal Casinos
Florida's Clean Air Act bans indoor smoking in enclosed workplaces.
However, since the Miccosukee Casino and the six Seminole-operated casinos are located on sovereign Indian lands and are tribal enterprises, they are allowed to decide their own rules on indoor tobacco use.
Besides the Miccosukees, the Seminoles allow smoking in designated areas of their casino floors at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, Seminole Coconut Creek, Seminole Classic Hollywood, Seminole Immokalee, and Seminole Brighton.
