Last year, the number of apartments evicted in Thuringia saw a slight increase from 791 in 2022 to 858, as per data from the Ministry of Justice in Erfurt. This leveled off to approximately the same number of evictions as in 2020 and 2021 when there were 967 evictions in 2019.

One expert, Elke Hünitzsch from the debt counseling service of the Thuringian Workers' Welfare Association, attributes the rise to inflation. She points out, "The rising cost of food has definitely become an issue." With wages on the lower end, people are finding their budgets stretched increasingly thin. "There used to be more breathing room," Hünitzsch notes. Often, expenses such as loan payments take precedence over rent, further straining finances.

An eviction can have a significant impact on those affected. However, advice centers attempt to help those in arrears resolve their rent debts promptly, offering options like installment payments or financial aid from local job centers. Hünitzsch acknowledges, "We often see people at our center when it's already too late." Should an eviction occur, it often results in a negative credit history alongside overdue rent, which hinders their ability to find a new apartment.
