Urgent Situations - In North Rhine-Westphalia, a total of 346 kids are classified as long-term missing.
National Children's Day has been celebrated on May 25th since 1983. President Ronald Reagan established this day in memory of six-year-old Etan, who vanished on his way to school on May 25th, 1979. Sadly, his whereabouts have remained unknown for several decades.
The LKA NRW refers to individuals with an undetermined location as 'long-term missing persons'. There is currently no universal definition for this term.
A recent database search (conducted on May 23rd) reveals that 346 children aged 0-13 from North Rhine-Westphalia have been missing for longer than six weeks. Many of these cases involve child abduction or unaccompanied minor refugees.
Approximately 30,000 individuals go missing in North Rhine-Westphalia annually. The vast majority of them are located within three days.
