In Ireland, a new legislative measure prohibits advertising for gambling during the hours of 5:30 AM and 9:00 PM.
A recent legislative proposition in Ireland prohibits advertising for gambling between the hours of 5:30 am and 9:00 pm. Racing TV (RTV) and Sky Sports Racing, two major Irish TV stations that broadcast horse racing, could potentially request a special exception to continue advertising. Otherwise, horse racing broadcasts may become unprofitable and could be discontinued due to the advertising restrictions.
The proposed bill has passed through the Irish parliament, but it is yet to be approved by the Senate. This means that amendments could still be made to the advertising ban. If RTV and Sky Sports Racing do not receive an exemption, they may consider halting the transmission of horse racing in Ireland.
RMG, the parent company of RTV, has ruled out the possibility of seeking financial assistance from gambling operators to make up for the loss of income from advertising. This would break broadcasting regulations. Via The Irish Times, RTV made the following statement:
"Displaying contributions from bookmakers as an alternative to advertising on the channel contradicts Ofcom’s advertising laws. We can confirm that no arrangements have been made with bookmakers regarding this issue. The current form of the bill makes it unviable for Racing TV to continue broadcasting in Ireland." - Racing TV, The Irish Times
In order to continue broadcasting gambling advertisements during the specific timeframe, Racing TV must apply for a unique license. Despite being a pay-TV station, the channel would still struggle to finance its horse racing coverage without the revenue generated from these ads.
Thus, if exemptions aren't granted, popular horse racing events in Ireland like the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National Festival may no longer be shown on television.
In Germany, horse racing aficionados have a variety of choices when it comes to viewing and streaming the sport. British and Irish race coverage is provided by several German broadcasters. Pay-TV service Sky carries horse racing events from those two countries, as well as others. Furthermore, online bookmakers that offer wagering on horse races sometimes stream these races live for betting fans.
Finally, international streaming platforms such as Racing TV also provide an option for viewers in Germany to watch horse racing broadcasts. We must wait and see whether RTV and Sky Sports Racing will receive permission to exhibit gambling ads in Ireland.
