Igor Figueiredo triumphs over Ken Doherty in the 2024 Snooker Mr Vegas World Seniors Championship finals.

Brazilian snooker player Igor Figueiredo, age 46, clinched the Mr Vegas World Seniors Championship 2024 title, overpowering Ken Doherty, the celebrated Irish snooker giant known for his 1997 world championship win, in a thrilling final. This victory marks the peak of his career for Figueiredo, who was celebrated with a grand EUR 23,145 prize money awarded to him. This tournament was hosted at the iconic Crucible Theatre from May 8-12.

In a gripping contest where each frame was a result of extraordinary dexterity of both the players, Figueiredo made an incredible comeback after trailing Doherty, the crowd favorite, in the first frame. He registered a century break to match Doherty's lead but followed it up with a streak of four consecutive wins. Although Doherty narrowed down the lead to 2:4, Figueiredo secured the championship with a decisive break of 88 points in the seventh frame.

Literally speechless after his momentous win, Figueiredo expressed his emotions:

I can't believe it! I feel like I'm still asleep or dreaming. I think I played well, and I'm really happy it was liked. An enormous thank you to everyone supporting me from Brazil. Words can't describe my happiness - Igor Figueiredo, Senior World Snooker Champion

Winning the tournament automatically qualifies Figueiredo for the Champions of Champions 2025. Not just the championship win, Figueiredo also claimed the bonus for the highest break of the competition, which amounts to an additional GBP 2,000 (EUR 2,324).

During the journey towards the title, Figueiredo overcame some of the most formidable rivals in snooker. He edged past Tessa Davidson, 55, a three-time women's snooker world champion, in the first round. In the quarter-finals, he beat Jimmy White, 62, who has claimed the title six times. Against Tony Drago, 58, he sealed his berth in the finals with a distinguished 4-1 win. He managed to lose only four frames throughout the competition.

After his sensational victory, Figueiredo displayed overwhelming emotions and kissed the trophy as the audience roared in applause [video source in English]:

In other WST news, Ronnie O'Sullivan, 48, who has won five titles in the current season, mesmerized everyone and earned himself Player of the Season recognition from the WST council, journalists, and fans. Kyren Wilson, 32, succeeded in winning the 2024 Cazoo Snooker World Championship, and was rewarded with the Performance of the Year award. The Magic Moment of the Season, a rare pool shot where the player pots all 15 balls flawlessly, went to Shaun Murphy, 41. A MASTERCLASS!*

Ken Doherty made it to the finals of the Mr Vegas World Seniors Championship for the second time. Previously, in 2020, he lost to Jimmy White with a score of 4:5. Until now, he hasn't achieved the Grand Slam, which would make him the first player to win all existing world snooker championships.

Throughout his career, Doherty has grabbed the World Snooker Championship, World Amateur Championship, and World Under 21 Championship titles. What he hasn't won yet is the senior one, which would complete the Grand Slam. This would be a historic accomplishment no one has managed before.

What's up after the Snooker World Championship?

Now that the Snooker World Championship and the World Seniors Championship have wrapped up, the 2023/2024 season has come to an end. The WST has yet to reveal the exact schedule of tournaments for the upcoming season. However, we know for sure that the British Women's Open 2024 will take place in Walsall, Great Britain, from May 24 to May 26. This event will be the initial ranking tournament during the 2024/2025 women's snooker season.

As for the men, the Shanghai Masters is likely one of the first significant tournaments set to happen. It's scheduled to take place from July 15 to July 21, 2024, in Shanghai, China. This is an invite-only event, and the official participant list has not been announced yet.

Will Doherty win the Snooker Grand Slam next year?
