Former BVB-Star Aubameyang Admits Depression
Revisiting the past: After five successful years in Dortmund, Aubameyang signed with Arsenal in 2018. At first, the striker had good success in his first full season, with 31 goals in 51 games, earning him the cup and supercup titles. Then, everything changed. In December, Arsenal removed Aubameyang's captaincy. The reason: arriving late from a vacation. Furthermore, he was excluded from the team by Mikel Arteta (42).
Now, Aubameyang is speaking up - and contradicting Arteta.
The Gabonese national player (74 games) divulged that he had secured Arteta's approval for visiting his unwell mother in France. He returned a day later to London. Aubameyang recalled, "When I came back, the coach ended his meeting, grabbed me, and raged at me as if I had betrayed him. He scolded me as if I was insane and said, 'You've stabbed me in the back. You can't do this to me during these tough times.'"
Shortly after, his Arsenal contract was mutually dissolved. He later played for Barcelona and Chelsea before joining Olympique Marseille in summer 2023. Now with the French team, Aubameyang helped make it to the Europa League semi-finals (1:1, 0:3 vs. Atalanta Bergamo).
