Modeling after an expert coach. - Hürzeler greatly admires Alonso.

Following their promotion to the Bundesliga with FC St. Pauli, coach Fabian Hürzeler (31) is eagerly anticipating the upcoming season.

Although one prominent Bundesliga coach indirectly played a part in their journey, as Hürzeler recently revealed.

Leverkusen's manager, Xabi Alonso (42), took over in October 2022 and led Bayer to the league title this season (with an unbeaten record so far), the Europa League final, and the DFB Cup final. Successes that St. Pauli can only dream of accomplishing. However, the promotion was still a cherished dream.

Hürzeler: I Adore Alonso!

But what influence does Alonso have on the matter?

Hürzeler provides the answer: "As a huge fan of Alonso, I admire the way he plays, the way he conducts himself, and the way he manages a team. His leadership style is incredibly impressive."

This approach cannot be emulated directly. Hürzeler says, "It's a more advanced quality, so you have to carefully consider what works for my team, my players, and what concept suits us best. It's not about duplicating, but rather extracting useful elements."

Hürzeler singles out a few of these beneficial elements. "For instance, the average passing distance for Leverkusen, which is 15 to 16 meters. This significantly improves passing accuracy during the game. We, on the other hand, average 18 meters." St. Pauli's stunning buildup play is powered by this strategy.

Alonso's coaching also leaves an impression on Hürzeler in terms of defense. However, this is exactly what distinguishes St. Pauli in the 2nd division. With only 35 goals conceded, the Kiez team boasts the league's best defense.

Hürzeler believes that continuous learning is crucial in life, as he frequently reminds us. Next season, he'll have the opportunity to learn even more from his role model Alonso – by facing him as a rival. Perhaps even in a clash between two champion managers.
